What to Expect from a Dance Class

It is natural to be excited before your first dance class and a little bit nervous as well. It would certainly help to know what to expect. Hopefully, this will make you more relaxed and allow you to focus on your moves.

In order for a dance class to start everyone must find a spot in the room. It is a good idea to arrive early in order to prepare for the lesson and in order to find a good spot from which you will be able to see and hear the instructor perfectly. If you are not comfortable with taking the front row, you can find a spot in the second or third and avoid going in the last one.

Dance classes always start with a warm-up. It includes basic stretching and cardio exercises designed to help you prepare your muscles, bones and joints and to get your heart rate to the optimal level. Music is played during the warm-up so you will certainly get in the mood for dancing.

The next part of the lesson typically focuses on the footwork for dancing. Footwork refers to the dance techniques related to the feet, their position and their movement during the dance. Basically, you will learn the main steps, so to speak. This is crucial in order to be able to get to the routines which are fairly complex. You cannot expect to learn the steps perfectly right away as it takes a considerable amount of practice. With time, you will learn more difficult and intricate footwork techniques which will allow you to improve your performance.

The main part of the lesson focuses on the dance routines. These involve a series of steps and moves which have to be memorized by the dancers. The instructor will show you the things which you will need to do as part of the routine. Usually, it is broken down into elements and combinations so that the students can learn it more easily. Do not worry if you do not get things right the first time around. You will certainly get a lot better with practice.

Not all classes have a special time devoted to cooling down. If this is the case with your class, you can readily stay for a few more minutes in the room to just stretch a bit before you change and head home. This will help you avoid injuries.
